Harmonica KP44 World Cruising boat For Sale

We are excited about purchasing a large sailing catamaran in Thailand but sadly this means Harmonica must be sold. She is well maintained, recently back from a crusie to Sarawak and ready to go again. We are asking about 50% of what she would have sold for 3 years ago, but we realize that the current market for sailing boats is poor. We consider her an extremely good buy for $100,000

The Kelly Petrson 44 is well known as a strong, reliable ocean cruiser. Harmonica was comisioned in San Diego Ca in 1979 for Jack Kelly. Designed by Doug Peterson she has good sialing performance and a sea-kindly ride. She is easily handled short-handed. She has sailed many miles single-handed. Most of the remainder she was manned by a cruising couple. The centre cockpit gives a comfortable private berth in the stern with companionways fore and aft as well as a passage beside the engine room.

We've logged almost as far as 2 laps of the world during the 13 years we have owned her. We feel that we sail conservatively, but She has still made several 170 mile days and performed reliably for us in good weather and bad. The hull is 1 inch thick solid fibreglass. The boat is exceptionally strong. The rudder is supported on a full-depth skeg, which also helps to protect the propeller in an apperture between the skeg & rudder. Our blog only lacks a sense of adventure because things so seldom go wrong.

Excellent deck layout for working offshore. Original fibreglass non-slip surface, and Solid, high bulwarks support the feet against slipping. Good hand rails go over the fibreglass dodger, and all the way round the top of the coach house. Spreader lights are mounted on the under sides of the top spreaders for setting sails and moving around the decks at night. There has been no weather in which I have not been round the foredeck night or day.

There is a comfortable cockpit with room to lie full length in any direction if you want a quick doze on night watch, or space to entertain other boat crews at anchor.

Harmonica has been continuously looked after, and has recently completed a refit including new Awlgrip topsides, International Perfection decks, varnish inside, stone counter top and more. A fibreglass hard dodger was added in 2005, which makes the cockpit dry and comfortable for night watches when seas are on the bow. Something that we designed while heading to windward across the Caribbean and into the N Atlantic. Wooden hatch trims were lapped with fibreglass in 2007 and seals and lexan replaced in the foreward deck hatches.

Standing rigging completely replaced in 2002 and the forstays were both renewed again in 2007 when the mast was out for inspection. All terminals except the forstay are user-reparable Norseman terminals. Chain plates were removed and replaced with double-thickness S/S (10mm) in 2008. All S/S stanchion bolts replaced 2006.

New mainsail 2010. New Genoa 2007. 2 other headsails & 2 staysails, spinnaker. Lazy-bag mainsail cover new 2009. Storm trisale is bright orange for extra visibility in rough seas. Harmonica has 3 poles for downwind sailing: whisker pole for the genoa, full-sized spinaker pole, and a reaching strut to hold out the spinnaker guy if you really want the boat on a fine reach. There are 8 winches - mostly Lewmar.

U-shaped galley has 3 burner propane stove. Addler Barber "Super Cold Machine" 12 volt refrigeration in a large, well insulated box.

New stone counter in galley, both heads, and dinette. New cushoins and upholstery 2010.

2 heads fore & aft. The Shower base was rebuilt and fibreglassed. Instant-on gas water heater in shower. One electric head & one manual head.

Comar CSB 200 AIS transceiver transmits position, course and speed to commercial shipping, while their details are plotted on the SiTex chart plotter. This makes for relatively comfortable night-time crossing of the Singapore shipping lanes.

SSB radio and pactor SCS IIe gives email communication anywhere in the world.

VHF radios. Radar. Plotter. TackTick "wireless" instruments including heading sensor, water speed, depth, temp, wind speed & direction. Fishfinder for back-up depth information and bottom character helps choosing anchoring spots.

4 solar panels, Kiss wind generator, and 120 Amp alternator provide lots of power for extended offshore cruising.

The engine driven watermaker provides 90 L/hr. Don't dream of installing a 12 volt system. This one uses strong, under-rated equipment from Wolf Watermakers that makes immensley more water than you might get with electrically driven systems.

The Comnav/AMS autopilot is normally used for day-sailing & coastal sailing. If the brushes are replaced every two years, it will sail every mile the boat travels without a hickup. We also carry a Sailomat wind vane which comes out more on longer ocean passages especially in the Trade Winds.

The older Westerbeke W60 engine has been regularly maintained and is reliable. Hurth gearbox. PSS shaft seal & MaxProp feathering propeller were installed in the Canarie Islands.
